Synopsis
Newly graduated, Tessa Young, goes to college and moves into her dorm room with the help of her mother and boyfriend Noah. There he meets his roommate, Steph, and his girlfriend Tristan. Her toxic mother is disgusted, thinking they can be bad influences for Tessa, and demands a change of room. However, Tessa assures her that nothing will distract her.
The next day is Tessa’s first day in college and she befriends Landon. Tessa meets Hardin Scott in her room, having an embarrassing encounter when she gets out of the shower. Steph invites her to go to a party with her friends, but Tessa refuses. The next day, he sees Hardin in a coffee shop along with Molly and Zed. She meets Steph again at the library and is persuaded to attend a party at a frat house eventually. She meets Steph’s friends; Zed, Molly, Jace and Hardin, who convince her to drink in a game of penance or truth.
The boys started playing, and when Tessa’s turn came they asked her if she was a virgin and she did not answer, so they had to challenge her and went to kiss Hardin, she refuses and then leaves the house to call Noah, but he judges her for drinking and having fun. Frustrated, she ends the call and wanders around the fraternity house. Wandering into Hardin’s room, Tessa finds a copy of Stormy summits and runs into Hardin, who tries to kiss her but she tells him that she is not okay. In literature class, Tessa sits next to Landon and gets into a debate with Hardin about pride and prejudice . Landon reveals that he and Hardin will be related, as his mother is engaged to Hardin’s father.
Hardin approaches Tessa and insists that they start over, inviting her to go with him to his favorite place, a lake. While swimming Tessa asks Hardin “who she loves in this world” and he replies “It’s easy on me” after much conversation, Hardin tells her that they can’t just be friends and the two kiss. After this, they head to a restaurant and meet Molly and Zed, which infuriates Hardin and asks Tessa to wait for him at the bar. Tessa tells Hardin that she will tell Noah about them, but Hardin tells him not to, as there was nothing between them, disappointing Tessa. The other day Noah surprises Tessa with a sudden visit and she takes him to the bonfire.
In a game of Suck and Blow, Jace purposely fails to kiss Tessa, causing a fight between him and Hardin. While Noah and Tessa sleep in their bedroom, she receives a call from Landon and leaves to see Hardin, who destroyed the house while drunk. She comforts Hardin and they reconcile after he gives her oral sex. Tessa falls asleep at Hardin’s House and returns to her bedroom to see Noah, who discovers her relationship with Hardin and leaves with a broken heart. Tessa and Hardin eventually decide to date, but her mother threatens to cut her off financially if the relationship continues.
Hardin finds a new apartment for the two and they both attend the wedding of his father and Landon’s mother. Hardin reveals that his father was a drunkard and that his mother was assaulted by the men he messed with. Tessa comforts him and the two return to their apartment for sex. The next morning, while they are together in the bathtub, Hardin writes” I love you “ on Tessa’s back.
Meanwhile, Tessa is annoyed by the text messages Hardin has been receiving from Molly. She tries to confront him, but he does not tell her that is what happens and leaves her to go with her friends. She leaves the apartment after waiting for him and finds him at a restaurant with Molly, Zed, Steph and Jace. Molly reveals Hardin’s original intentions to pursue Tessa, showing her a video she recorded after Tessa refused to kiss Hardin at her previous party. It is revealed that he began to pursue Tessa only as a challenge to make her fall in love with him and break up with her. Tessa, shocked and heartbroken, runs away from Hardin. He follows her and tries to explain to her that it was before he met her and that he really loves her. Tessa goes home to reconcile with her mother and Noah, who forgive her.
In the following weeks, Tessa cuts ties with Steph and her group of friends and moves into a different bedroom. She focuses on her studies, keeps in touch with her mother and boyfriend Noah, and eventually interviews for a show at Vance Publishing. After literature class one afternoon, professor Soto gives Tessa a work done by Hardin, believing that her essay was about her. As Tessa reads it, she returns to the lake where she and Hardin first kissed. When Hardin comes and sits near her, Hardin recounts her letter saying, “ You once asked me who I loved most in the world. It’s you.”

Production
In 2014, Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to adapt After into a film.8 Susan McMartin, who until then was the screenwriter of After, left the project in mid-2017. Tamara Chestna was hired to update McMartin’s script. Director Jenny Gage was also responsible for the final revisions of the script.9
Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of CalMaple Films and Jennifer Gibgot of Offspring Entertainment were hired to produce the film. CalMaple, Voltage Pictures and Diamond Film Productions financed the film. Aron Levitz, Anna Todd and Dennis Pelino of CalMaple also produce it. Meadow Williams and Swen Temmel of Diamond Films will serve as executive producers.10 on November 28, 2017, Anna Todd announced that Jenny Gage would be the director of the film.11
Casting
On May 8, 2018, Julia Telles and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin were selected for the main roles of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott. The actors were selected by Anna Todd, who fell in love with their chemistry together.
