For the first time and without killing animals
restaurant serves pieces of chicken made in laboratory
The first sold dish made with the product of the startup Eat Just was served in the restaurant “1880”, located in the Singapore Recreation Center. While the option is still quite expensive, the company assured that a future could be cheaper than real meat.
A restaurant in Singapore has just been transformed into the first in the world to serve meat made in laboratories, as reported by Agence France-Presse.
The meat, created by American startup Eat Just based on chicken cells, was approved for sale in the Southeast Asian city state earlier this month.
The company announced that the first restaurant to purchase its product was “1880”, which is located in the entertainment center of Singapore. The product was served to “a group of inspiring young people who volunteered to build a better planet,” according to the event’s press release.
“I’m speechless. It will save the lives of animals and will be much more convenient,” said one of the guests at the event.
Unlike vegetable meats, eat just chicken is made from cells grown inside bio-reactors, where they are combined with other ingredients extracted from plants.
To date, these products are much more expensive than regular meat. However, the startup hopes to consolidate in order to offer its merchandise even cheaper than real chicken.
“ We will start with a single restaurant, then go up to 5, 10, 15 and eventually reach retail, “ said Josh Tetrick, CEO of Eat Just in an interview with CNBC.
