Mozambique braces for tropical storm Chalane
Mozambique is bracing for another tropical storm, expected to strike imminently on Wednesday in or around Beira, a coastal town that suffered the brunt of Cyclone Idai in 2019.
Tropical Storm Chalane is not expected to have the same catastrophic effects as Idai, but it continued to strengthen as it approached in a favorable environment, especially when crossing the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel.
The Instituto Nacional de Meteorología ( INAM ) in Mozambique has issued a high-level red alert for, among others, communities in Sofala province which include Beira and Dondo, warning that the first impacts would begin on Tuesday evening.
“The epicenter will pass through Nhamatanda district and on the afternoon of December 30, it will reach Manica province, entering through Gondola district, subsequently affecting Macate and Sussudenga districts,” the said. INAM agency.
The storm can also reach Category 3 status (on a scale of 1 to 5) when the epicenter is within 30 kilometers of Beira, according to INAM. Maximum wind speeds for Chalane were reported at 110 km / h by the Météo France office in Reunion Island as the storm approached.
Chalane is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it enters Zimbabwe on Wednesday evening, with Chimanimani and Chipinge districts likely to be the hardest hit.
